We opted to stay at the lodge due to a short visit while traveling through La Fortuna due to a Rebeca, we wanted to see the hotel and she showed us rooms and the lodge, on our way back from another destination we stayed at the hotel and were quite pleased the rooms were nice the restaurant for dinner suprised us it was great and the service was wonderful as were all the staff.

The view can't be beat; the person who booked our zipline tours was more than friendly. they even let us use the phone to call the US because we had a death in the family during our stay. the grounds are fantastic, the pool is beautiful. it's tough to get to but so worth it. the horses are 25 years old. i felt like i was riding a grandfather... they could barely walk. miguel takes excellent care of them and is a great guide but perhaps the hotel should look into letting these guys "retire". the drive up is a steep adventure but the road is well maintained

cons: hard beds, food is just okay for the price; some items very good, some just okay. the waiter who served our breakfast, lunch and dinner the first few days was openly adn extremely rude, not just to us but to other guests as well. we stopped eating at their restaurant because we were actually scared to have him serve us. when he had his day off, another waiter (esteban?) was just as kind as could be to us. 

if not for the one extremely rude waiter, this place would get 5 stars.

Views of the Volcano and the lake are amazing. The property overlooks the west side of the volcano and situated on the next hill. If you want to take pictures of the volcano on the sunset it is one of the best places. Drive up from the road 142 is steep and about 2 km long. It is brick covered so you do not need to have 4 weal drive car to get to the lodges. We have seen many different animals on the drive up to the lodge (specially after dark). On the first day the guard at the gate showed us a green frog. Kids were very excited to hold it in their hands. Staff speaks English very well and friendly. The breakfasts are very good. Looks like the continental and A-la-carte breakfasts are alternates on the different days. Both are good and filling. A lot of products used in the restaurant are grown on the property including milk and meat. There are free guided tours offered by the lodge. Take it, especially if you have kids. Miguel (local guide) will show you a lot that you will not be able to recognize on your own. We had a good time on the nature walk (2 hours long, every day starting at 9 AM). He also guides you on the 1 hour horse tour at 11AM and 1 PM. You have to sign up in advance. My wife, both of our kids (7 and 15) and I took both tours. We had a blast. In general, we would recommend taking a guided tour if offered in Cost Rica. You will learn a lot and will able to see things you will never suspect are there if do not know what to look for.

We spent one night at the Arenal Lodge. The driveway up from the main road is narrow and steep. The moss on the cobblestones probably is wet and slippery when it rains. The staff at the reception desk were very friendly and greeted us with a glass of fresh juice. We had clear weather and a grand view of the volcano. The swimming pool looked inviting although the water wasn't very warm. There are two Jacuzi tubs, with cold water and the jets didn't seem to work. It was a long drive from our home in Playa Ocotal and we opted to eat at the hotel rather than driving to a restraunt in town. Our dinner was a pleasant surprise, with everyone enjoying their selections from steak to fish and chicken. Our waiter was very nice and attentive although it was his last night working at the hotel. Our rooms, in the older part of hotel were comfortable, however, our mattress pad didn't fit the queen size bed and kept sliding off during the night. Coffee in the room was nice in the morning as I took pictures of the grounds and the mountain. I felt that the waiter was a bit rude when we arrived at the restaurant before it was open for breakfast the next morning. I guess we surprised him. Breakfast included an assortment of fresh fruit and a choice of the American breakfast or typical Costa Rican. Both were generous portions. All in all, I would say that it was a good value and we enjoyed our stay.

Very nice hotel and room, the food was good and the staff very nice. Very nice breakfast, nice pool and fantastic view.
